Sad that the interstate runs through the refuge but seems you were able to hike away from it. I grew up traveling on the NY State Thruway that goes right through the refuge. You are right about the traffic sounds being out of place, but it's wonderful to ride through that section of the thruway and to be able to see some of the wildlife. For many people that's probably the only time they ever went through a refuge like that and hopefully it's encouraged people to visit the Montezuma National Wildlife refuge. All of your posts about locations in NY state have been very interesting for a person who grew up in that area. You have even posted about a few locations I never went to. I didn't know there were any free campsites in the Fingerlakes area of NY state. Thank you for sharing pictures of all the places I love in NY State!Kathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05097494939774485264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4309293625176086078.post-58885656017124838492016-08-09T20:10:05.058-04:002016-08-09T20:10:05.058-04:00What beautiful, beautiful pictures!!! I especially love the Great Blue Heron with the halo of swamp roses. It's unfortunate that the highway runs right through the refuge—but at least it provides a protected place for wildlife in the midst of civilization. I'm always trying to ID dragonflies and damselflies, and mostly resort to body size (which seems to be pretty accurate). Thanks for the refresher course in the finer details. :-) Laurel (www.ravenandchickadee.com)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09133248112440273123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4309293625176086078.post-75905195250964591822016-08-09T15:36:39.009-04:002016-08-09T15:36:39.009-04:00The Thruway disrupts a lot of views:( At least th...The Thruway disrupts a lot of views:( At least there are no alligators there:)Chuck and Anneke's RV travelshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01929384797592263167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4309293625176086078.post-49034226899975839562016-08-09T11:59:47.095-04:002016-08-09T11:59:47.095-04:00Hope Montezuma didn't inflict any "Reveng...Hope Montezuma didn't inflict any "Revenge" on you from your visit! ;c)

Paul and Marti Dahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17332654035718777839noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4309293625176086078.post-57422006329510674442016-08-09T11:09:01.051-04:002016-08-09T11:09:01.051-04:00Thanks so much for sharing these lovely places wit...Thanks so much for sharing these lovely places with us! So I suppose we just have to guess on the gender since there are males & females of each. Who knew entomology could be so interesting? Mr. Ruskin did in the only entomology course I ever took - he was great because he was so incredibly excited all the time and he shared his enthusiasm with his students. Lucky me!
