Hanging out with Carrie

Having lived in the Charlottesville Virginia area for over 30 years  (23 miles SW of the town for someone who asked),  we’ve been to Washington DC many times.  It’s about 2 hours from us.  So this trip really isn’t about seeing the capital, it is about visiting with Carrie.   We will go in to the city a time or two when she goes back to work but as you know, in our travels I’m not much for cities and only Carrie could have gotten me this close.  Smile

But today was all about hanging out with her and with Matthew.  We went over for breakfast and Matthew put on quite a spread.  I got a picture of the chef at work.  But I was again too busy enjoying the food to get a picture before it was only empty plates.  This seems to be a habit of mine.

Serendipity also provided a visit from one of her long time school friends whom I have known since they were both in junior high school.  It was great to see Niels and talk politics and about his upcoming move into the Biology PhD program at VCU in Richmond.  We’re all wishing him great good fortune in his future.  BTW, Carrie is 5’4”.

In the evening Carrie and Matthew came over to visit us and Winnona.  We had some great pizza from a local place in Greenbelt that I am happy to recommend called Meli Mello Pizza.   Sorry I didn’t take a picture of the pizzas when they first came.  They were terrific looking and tasting.  Clearly I am not a foodie.  I won’t describe them since I don’t want your mouth to water.

Matthew is feeling under the weather.  He’s had a cold now for over two weeks.  He’s quite a trooper though.  We played hearts and I had the highest score.  Guess you know what that means.   Carrie had the lowest at 18 points although Matthew said he regretted “letting her shoot the moon”.  HA!

I used my camera to take some pictures of the many pretty faces of my beloved daughter.  Here are just a few.  They are a Mother’s Day gift to myself.   Sure wish I had a profile like that.  Ah to be in my 30’s again!   And know what I know now of course.

We’ll be headed out to DC for Mother’s Day tomorrow.  I was REALLY REALLY hoping to visit the Library of Congress but of course like lots of libraries it is closed on Sundays.  I particularly wanted to see it with Carrie since she and I are the big readers in the family.  But sadly I’ll have to make a second trip in to the city on a week day if I want to see it.  We never ever went to DC during the week because it is such a zoo.  We always went on the week-ends which believe it or not are usually much calmer.  Hope everyone doesn’t decide the Smithsonian is the place to go on Mother’s Day.  :-)

  6. Carrie certainly is a beautiful woman. When I lived in Falls Church I used to drive into the city early on Saturday morning. I'd park down by the Vietnam Memorial and then start walking toward the Smithsonian buildings. I had the whole place to myself until mid-day when more people arrived, but it never did get too crowded. After walking my feet off in the museums I had to go way back down the Mall to the Vietnam Mem. Those were some good days.

  7. Carrie is lovely. I'm so glad you're getting to spend time, together. I'm with you. I don't like cities or suburbia, but here I am. Stuck in the suburbs of Atlanta. What an ideal life you have--traveling all winter and retreating to your most beautiful farm.:)

  12. I don't know about DC being calmer on weekends ... esp. in the spring when the tourist season is in full swing. The Library of Congress is worth braving the crowds and I always found it less crowded than other sites of interest.

  16. Nice to have the option of sight-seeing if you are moved to do so, but not feeling the pressure of touring when you really want the time to just visit with family. Enjoy yourselves!

  18. What lovely photos of your daughter! I can see why you said they are a Mother's Day gift to you. I wonder if my sons would pose for me like that??? From the description of your special time with Carrie, your trek into the city was way more than worth it. Hope the Smithsonian on Mother's Day was icing on the cake.

  19. isn't it strange that as we get older, nothing matters quite as much as seeing our kids, (even if it is just a pic) and hearing their voice. . .love all your lovely Mother;s Day presents. . .just beautiful!

  20. Looks like a wonderful Mother's Day. I like the spot you are staying in Washington DC although its doubtful we could get in. years ago when we had the popup we did stay at Cherry Hill. Expensive, but we just went for a weekend to see the Cherry blossoms and the Nat Geo Museum had the Chinese Tombstone Warriors on exhibit and I wanted to see that. We tried their bus to the metro as well. With all the stops it made it took an hour and a half to get to the station; we drove it in 10 minutes!

  23. It is certainly evident that Carrie is "yours." She really is beautiful. I know you are proud of not only of her outer beauty, but of the woman she has become and the life she has created for herself. Can't wait to see if you made it to the Library of Congress and what you did while there. I found it to be totally overwhelming!
