What You Can See on an Ordinary Week-end

Saturday March 14 & Sunday March 15, 2015
O’Leno State Park
High Springs, Florida

SATURDAY March 14

Today is the Classic Car Cruise at Quail Run.  Cars all along the streets and a community yard sale and raffle.
David is pretty happy that it just so happens we are here for this week-end.  Never too many classic cars for him.  I give him the camera and a while at the show by himself so he won’t feel pressured by my presence and probable impatience.  When I join him, I think that like the smaller show at Collier-Seminole, there are too many hot rods. Not enough restored originals.  But for those I find, I love the details. Even in the one hotrod on my list.  Here are some favorites.  His and Hers.

HIS

The first car on the left was one we recognize from the show at Collier-Seminole.  But the others are new to us.

The red 57 T-Bird is David’s pick for show winner.   It’s the one he’d drive away in if he could.

Anybody else out there who had a bread and pastry delivery man in their childhood?  This Crosley reminded me of that.

Not sure what category this is in.  I think it just drove through since by the time I came to join David, it was gone.

Looks like a 30’s bootlegger hotrod equipped for delivery or just in case you get thirsty.

HERS

I do love old Pickups.  Great place for a spare.

I don’t’ really like antique cars turned into hotrods but the blue streaks remind me of Kenickie’s car in Grease and besides, I love the passengers in the back.  David says he thinks it’s a pretty hot car for the mouses.

This is my award of the show car.  I’d  give this one the top prize and hop in this and drive away in a heart beat.

That’s the original tire on the running board.  Really nice job of restoration with newer tires.

At first I thought the foot rest was a great idea until I realized the back seat was so deep there is no way my feet could reach it.  The picture doesn’t give a clear indication of the good three foot depth of the seat.  Great for Wilt Chamberlin or anyone else with a thigh that long.

These folks did hop in their cars and head out as we were leaving.  I promise no more car show pictures even if there is one that follows David home again.

We spend the evening eating popcorn and watching the ACC Season Champions Virginia Cavaliers lose in the ACC Tournament Semi-finals to the UNC Tarheels.  Then we watch the Duke Blue Devils lose to Notre Dame a school that IMO shouldn’t even be in the ATLANTIC COAST conference. I mean really, Indiana on the Atlantic Coast?  Sort of like Louisville.   It’s all about TV money and the ND fans are the losers having to travel so far away for road games and tournaments if they want to support their team. There were very few fans in the stands but they won anyway.   I’m really fed up with everything being all about money.  What was it the best selling book of all time in this country said about that?  “For the love of money is the root of all evil…”.   I could not agree more!  There are lots of quotes from the Bible going around to justify all sorts of things but it seems few pay an attention to these words about their focus on money.

It will be UNC and Notre Dame for the conference title.

SUNDAY March 15

Today is our last day at Quail Run.  We’ll be leaving after David’s appointment tomorrow.  Or at least that’s the plan at this minute.  I head over to Whole Foods to do some grocery shopping.  Since I pass right by a Target and a Walmart, I stop in to look at runner rugs and again find nothing like what I’m looking for.  I just am at a loss where to go to get three 21” by 60” runners and a 3’x5’ throw rug for the entry.

We take a last walk around the park taking some pictures of what we find unique.

Like this cool bike cover although at 79 lbs and $400 it isn’t in our future.

One of our neighbors has this classic Rolls that David always remarks about every time we walk by.  Even the large flatbed trailer and its tires that they tow the car on is a “rolls”.  HA!

Have you ever seen a dual hose for the two bathroom coach??  I zoom in to see the funnel we assume is there but I’m not sure what’s going on.

These are all in the new area with the premium sites.  It’s clear where the older part of the park where we stayed last time begins.  The beautiful Live Oaks give it away.

On the main corner where you turn to go into the premium area is the street sign for Pace Arrow to the left into the older area and Hurricane to the right into the new area.  But I love the Heron Crossing sign although I’ve never seen a heron crossing here.  We did see a sand hill crane walking down the street a bit later.   I love the tree shaded streets in the park’s older section.

There are some park models at Quail Run and quite a few “permanent” looking set ups although most of these are quite nice and may be folks from the North who just rent year round here because it is less expensive than driving back and forth.  This is the most elaborate of several decks outside of 5th wheels.

It actually looked like all of these satellite dishes might be going to one coach.  That can’t be true can it?

One of the neighbors takes  a stroll across a main intersection in front of the Quails Nest game building.   Guess he thinks he might need to walk down the sidewalk now that he’s crossed the street.  Just too much fun!!

Since we are in front of Quail’s Nest and it is Mexican Train night, we stop in to see who is here this week. There are two tables.  One is playing regular Mexican Train and the other a variation entitled Chicken Foot.

Regular Mexican Train

Chicken Foot played with the lazy man’s dominoes.  See the chicken feet?

Quails Nest also has 3 electronic dart boards, a ping pong table and 2 pool tables.  No one was using those this evening but they look very nice as does the puzzle table where one finished puzzle and one in progress are resting.

And to end the evening, the Irish beat the Tar Heels for the ACC Championship.  They can carry their ATLANTIC COAST conference title back to inland and Great Lake shore Indiana.   The conference that once was 8 schools on the ATLANTIC COAST from Maryland to Georgia is now 15 schools with no geographic connection whatever.

Tomorrow, if we can, we’ll be leaving for O’Leno State Park in High Springs, Florida.   If you have suggestions of things to do in the area, let us know!  We hope to be hiking and kayaking if the weather will cooperate.

  1. I agree with your views on the ACC, Sherry, but was very happy that neither the Tarhells or Dook won it. Give me anyone other than those two again. At least ND has a nice coach. :-) Go 'Hoos!

  2. Thanks for all the good car show pictures!
Never seen a two hose rig before, must be for the rich and famous.

  3. Seems like some people have more money than they know what to do with. A Rolls and two bathrooms?

  4. Money n sports - I did taxes this week for a couple that work at the same school. He is the Athletic Director, she is the Principal - guess who gets paid more

  5. Sorry, I'm afraid I have no interest in old cars or, I assume, college basketball. I did like the sandhill though. ;)

  6. I mentioned before that Steve likes cars. Not only does he likes cars, he used to build/modified muscle cars. That is why he is always drawn to any car show.
I think they should replace the Heron Crossing with Sandhill Crossing :)
Your neighbors out there have pretty nifty set up.

  7. I really enjoyed seeing all those great cars. Yes, the one with the model on the roof is the winner.

  8. Love the picture of the landfill out for a stroll. I use to enjoy the car shows but thy come with people, LOTS of people, so I enjoyed your car pics. Hoping for good news from the Docs!

  10. Old trucks always win over cars for me so David's Mac and your pickup would be my favs :-) Since folks were shorter in those days I'm not sure who that back seat was designed for? Don't know how that dual hose setup works, but the OCD in me appreciates the neat and symmetrical assembly :-) But really my favorite pic of the day is of the Rolls wheels on the trailer. My dad never had one, and probably never wanted one, but he loved that kind of thing - the simple personalization that no one else had, connecting two things to make them "fit". Makes me smile, thanks.

  11. I love car shows. Best part is talking to the owners who usually have some interesting history about their favorite car. The whole park looks like a fun experience.

  12. Those cars are real beauties- and so is that bird!

  13. We had a bread truck - Fischer Bakery - that came by your house when I was a kid. It was overkill because being such a German city there were bakeries in every block. I still love fresh baked goods, and damn the calories!

  14. Classic cars and basketball bore me silly :) We learned how to play chicken foot dominoes in Florida, we really thought it was fun! Safe travels to your next Florida destination :)

  15. I'd take the B Cab Mack truck any day of the week. Fabulous restoration. And to think a million years ago before my Coast Guard days, I was attending an automotive/diesel training school and I cut up a junked one of those with torch to get the engine out to rebuild. Back then it was junk, today it's a classic. :c)

  17. I don't recall if you've been to Dudley Farm near O'Leno SP. You would love it. (http://ravenandchickadee.com/2014/03/life-cracker-farmstead/)
And of course, I'm sure you're planning to kayak the Ichetucknee River, my all time favorite. High Springs is a cute little town and the restaurant (Great Outdoors) is very good, often with local musicians performing.

  18. Prayers for a great report tomorrow. Boy, I wish our trailer had that tilt ramp! We have to lift our "tail gate" and it is pretty darned heavy. As John gets weaker and I have to lift more.....well, we are thinking of a wench. The mechanical type...not another woman. lol

  19. Absolutely love the classic Mack truck!
We were born and raised in ACC land and it was in our blood. We watched most games and every tournament until 1997 when Gin lost sight in one eye. We haven't watched a game since then. Kinda put life in perspective for us. I remember when Ga Tech was the new team. Fifteen teams is way too many not to mention the Atlanti Coast thingy.

  20. Somehow my dad had many of these cars when I was growing up - the '49 Mercury, '52 Chevy, '50 Ford (he had the sedan, not the pickup truck) and early 50s Desoto & Plymouths too., They never looked quite as good as these did though. The '52 Chevy was the first of his cars to have an automatic transmission which I remember being the most mushy drive train ever, not hardly worth the alleged convenience of not having to shift. You put your foot on the gas and waited for the car to eventually start moving. They were fluid clutches with names like Fluid Drive, Dynamatic and hydromatic. I think hydromatic made it into the lyrics of one of the songs in "Grease". The 50's were a wonderful time for so many reasons, the cars probably least among them. Thanks for preserving this day with pictures!
