Site 25, Henderson Beach State Park
Destin, Florida
This morning at 4am i am jolted awake by what I think is the wind jerking the awning.
I am worried as I lay and listen to the wind howling. Have we put up the awning deflappers? We usually do but I am afraid we had not when we arrived her. We also haven’t had to tie the awning down in a long time.
Rather than just lay here worrying, I get up to take the awning down. I go outside and even though the full moon is over a week past, the sky is not at all dark. The lights of the businesses of Route 98 light up the sky. I stand outside and find that the bushes and trees which surround our site making it feel very cozy and private also block most of the wind. The noise I am hearing and thought was howling wind is rather howling traffic from the 4 lane Route 98. At 4:00 in the morning?
I have a hard time going back to sleep and awake at about 7:30 feeling groggy and tired. It is 50 degrees outside and the predicted high is 67 with winds of 18 to 22 mph. Doesn’t sound like a great beach day.
I know, I know only Floridians would think that isn’t a great day.
My excuse is that now I are one.
I do go out for my run, and David for his walk. When we return he makes pancakes. Because this feels like a cool day to us, I put a crockpot of soup on to cook while we walk down the lovely boardwalk to the beach and mosey down the beach to the day use area and up to the dune hike trail.
The water of course is just gorgeous. Looks like a Caribbean sea.
Along the gulf I smile at the gentle quiet waves, so gentle babies can crawl in it. Folks having a good time on this cooler than usual day. Here is David in his long pants and flannel shirt amid these folks in the water playing. HA! And talk about relaxed, this woman is having her shoes removed for her. Now that’s the life.
I have seen very few shells here on this white sugar sand beach so I look more closely at the detritus line and find quite a few of what I think are little coquina clam shells. Their subtle colors are varied and their look is quiet. There are also many pieces of what were once large heavy sand dollars.
Just as we arrive at the boardwalk up to the trail head we see what looks like a wedding being set up. What a lovely backdrop they will have.
Sometimes you see the strangest things where you least expect them.
When we reach the trail head we see what sort of looks like a small telescope building but it is fenced off with a WARNING US Government property sign. It turns out this is a US Air Force ‘tracking installation’ and was first installed in 1951. Well all righty then.
To reach the trail we walk through the playground. I have always wanted to swim with manatee and ride on a sea turtle’s back. Neither of those is likely to happen but when I see this big turtle I realize now’s my chance..
Wish I could say it was another great trail.
We’ve come over to hike the dune trail hoping for something like what we found at Grayton Beach.
But it is not to be. The trail is nice enough though not nearly as spectacular as the one at Grayton. The problem is we are walking in what sounds like the center strip of a 4 lane super highway. We are never away from the noise and seldom away from the views.
We walk back along the water speculating about whether we will see the sun set over the water or the high-rises tonight. We both know the answer since the beach faces south here at Henderson.
The soup is ready and with a salad and some garlic toast we have a fine dinner.
Even if it were warm enough, we wouldn’t eat outside on the patio here. We close up the windows and put on Loreena McKennitt. She’s great for changing the atmosphere.
Now about that sunset.
No matter the noise, the beach is still beautiful and if you are right down by the water, it is all you can hear. So we walk down the great boardwalk, this park’s best feature in my mind, and I get my toes in that water warmer than the air.
Only two other people are on the beach and no one else comes down to see the sunset. Perhaps like me, they all prefer to see it set over the water. But it doesn’t.
The color is lovely in the sky over the ocean though as we head back to go over and get some groceries at The Fresh Market right across the street. Now that’s one convenient thing about being right in the middle of a resort on the main road. All the services you need are right outside your front door.
Hope the weather is warmer tomorrow. The best thing to do in this park is to stay right down by the water. And I’ve got my earplugs ready for tonight.
Such a shame to have to sleep with earplugs in such a beautiful place surrounded by noise. Love that last shot, and you riding a turtle. Now if I could just find a zebra to ride. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a shame but, the beach and the sand are beautiful and the noise much less down there. We do have our animal riding pipe dreams don't we?
DeleteLove that you eat JMC and soup out of the same bowl :) Our weather here is changing all of a sudden too. Hot today, and now chilly tonight!
ReplyDeleteHmm I guess that does say something about the relative amounts doesn't it!
DeleteSorry the park isn't what you wanted. Can you double back and go back to the last one?
ReplyDeleteWe're only here for 5 days and the weather has been crummy all around so we'll just enjoy the good parts and stay near the water as much as we can.
DeleteI laughed when I saw that you were eating soup out of the same bowl you ate ice cream out of last night. That soup sure looked good!
ReplyDeleteIt's my favorite bowl BJ. My Reece's peanut butter cup bowl. I should eat more soup and less candy and ice cream that's for sure.
DeleteIt's going to be cooler here in Sarasota for a couple of days, too. Kind of a welcome respite from summer temps already here!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the cool, it's the rain that puts a damper on being at the beach. We're headed for our last beach stop for a while so I'm sorry when I see pretty much rain rain rain.
DeleteWe're expecting cooler temps here too and we're looking forward to it. It's been too hot and we love being able to open the windows at night. I hope you get some beach days.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen, I'm hoping for some beach days too and that our last gulf beach stop will allow open windows at night. Don't you love those night sounds??
DeleteCool, windy, and wet ... that's been May so far, but at least yesterday we didn't have any wet stuff to deal with. Cool I appreciate.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Erin. I thought Florida's rains started in June but who knows these days. Hope you get some warmer, calmer and dryer too.
DeleteHope you didn't break that turtle's back, after all the JMC you've been eating... ;c)
ReplyDeleteIt's true Paul. I'm going to have to get a much smaller bowl for that ice cream.
DeleteYour hike today on the trail reminds me of all the books that I read after a really great book. They never measure up to the best one. But if we didn't have the 'not as great' books we could not experience and appreciate the spectacular ones. Point of view is everything isn't it!?!
ReplyDeleteSuch a good analogy Karen. It's true we have to have the lows to recognize how great the highs are. Point of view is everything. It's good to hear from you again.
DeleteNow soup is what I should have made yesterday. Let's talk about cool temperatures... ;)
ReplyDeleteGood point Judy. I suspect it's cooler where you are than where I am. Although, yesterday when I woke up it was 1 degree warmer in Charlottesville than here. Hope we both get a little warming....not too much mind you, just a little.
DeleteThe best place for swimming with the Manatees we found was in the Crystal River area which is on the Gulf Side. The area of the Three Sisters Hot Springs was packed with them back in February and March. It was an experience we hope to repeat next January.
ReplyDeleteThe soup looked great and so did the dunes. Be Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
You've spotted yesterday's high points Rick and Kathy, the soup and the dunes. We've been kayaking at the Three Sisters and saw all the boats with the manatee trips. They were everywhere. I felt sorry for the manatee. Almost like they were being hunted. Sounds like it didn't seem that way to you. That's good to know.
DeleteThat is the one thing we noticed most with our few trips to Florida, was the amount of traffic and traffic noise. Your sunset is beautiful, even if it wasn't over the water. Love the photo with the colour of the sky and the grasses. We had a neat sunset last night but no camera to take a picture of it. Hopefully we will get our camera either tomorrow or Tuesday. Sure miss not having one.

We haven't had the traffic and noise problem nearly so much until we got up into the upper panhandle. Most state parks are well off the roads so we'll just have to be careful to avoid those that aren't. I hope your camera comes tomorrow too. For me it would be very hard to describe the difference between the sunset over the condos and the afterglow over the Gulf. As they say, A picture....
DeleteHi Sherry, just found your blog last week and love following along with you guys. I really have enjoyed the pics...seems like my feet r wet already. The panhandle is also our favorite place to camp and explore. We are heading that way in 3 weeks down to Ft Pickens...sure hope that rains gone by then.
ReplyDeleteIce cream sure looks goods how do you stay so skinny?
Jana welcome to the blog. So glad to hear from you. Our next stop is Fort Pickens but we won't be there for 3 weeks so we'll miss you. Maybe in the future we'll run into each other. I'm only 5' tall so if I want to eat all the sweets I seem to crave I have to run which I hate. But I do it, between 4 and 5 miles every day. Follow along and hear me complain about it. :-)
DeleteWell it seems like every day obviously but actually it's every OTHER day. And that's more than enough thank you. :-) Hope to hear from you often
DeleteI recall Fort Pickens being quite remote and quiet except for the fighter jets. Glad you like The Fresh Market which I only recently discovered. I think you inspired me to make soup today. It's been sunny but cool in Houston. One more thing, I feel the same way about Loreena McKennitt!
ReplyDeleteGlad I could return the favor Pam. I have you to thank for The Fresh Market suggestion. I wondered if anyone else would be a Loreena fan and I'm not surprised it's you. I haven't even mentioned the jets and helicopters here. Seems they are around a lot in the Panhandle skies at least from St. Andrews north. I probably should be heading west. :-)
DeleteHAhaa I want to go play with the lady whose shoes are being removed for her.. HAHaaaa ....
ReplyDeletenice turtle sitting! you see that news video of the manatee doing sit ups? pretty funny... or was that a walrus... no... hmmm well? it was pretty funny regardless... guess I could google
I love Fresh Market too ... for some reason Celtic music doesn't ring my bell. I do like all music though. I've been listening to my favorites on YouTube this afternoon ~ I'm out here in m'tent ~ I'm listening to her now since you like her to see if I made a mistake ;) ~ I'm listening to several of her songs ~ makes me want to see fairies ~
lol... David's in his long pants... y'kill me
Florida Beaches are just the best. The sunset is still very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful water and beautiful sunset picture, but so unfortunate that it is always so loud with cars whizzing by - that certainly takes the natural feel away :( I can tell you aren't native Floridians - just like me...you're not the type to wear bathing suits on a moderately warm day :) That dinner looks like it was completely scrumptious. Yum!!
