On the Road Again

Tuesday and Wednesday September 23 and 24, 2014
Leaving Mammoth Cave/Back in Virginia

TUESDAY

IMG_8728

David wants a last hurrah at the hotel restaurant so we walk over.   Wish you could see the look as he waits for his breakfast.  But he’s all smiles when it arrives.  It is delicious, one of the best breakfasts we’ve had on the road.  Everything is perfect.  My eggs are perfectly lightly scrambled. the bacon is perfectly cooked, the potatoes are crisp, not greasy.  Fabulous small biscuits and home made black cherry jam complete this recipe for a heart attack.

We get packed up and have a group of viewers watching us do it.  They are on the move too as we leave Mammoth Cave at about 11am and drive 268 miles to a Walmart in Barborsville, WVa which seems much nicer than the rest area at I 64 MP 172 near Grayson Kentucky where we had planned to stay.  We park back by the loading dock and away from the store which is open 24 hours a day.  It is nice and quiet during the evening.

WEDNESDAY

Unfortunately the Walmart spot was quiet until around midnight when the deliveries started.  So it was a night of interrupted sleep.  But we are up and on the road again arriving back in Charlottesville in the early afternoon after 289 miles of driving.   Whew, I’m glad to be done with that.

David goes over to UVA for the blood draw and urine collection that will be the beginning of his new round of treatment.  He has an appointment with his doctor for the following day to firm up the new treatment plan but it doesn’t look like the treatments can start until next week and there will be no news about how it is working for another 5 weeks after that.   He feels fine but then he always felt fine other than during ‘the year of the stem cell transplant’.    Only the blood draws tell him how sick he is.   This was definitely not how we thought our full timing life would go.

I’ll try to put up a post highlighting what we’ve done while we are here for those interested but for now, the travel posts are over.  We had only planned to be here for two weeks in late November but things change whether you want them to or not.

One thing for sure, we’ve got to get the fields mowed. The grass looks as tall as the Kansas Prairie and  the farmhouse almost looks lost in a sea of green.

  3. David is one amazing man (you already knew that), despite his setbacks, he keeps on moving and always seems to have a smile on his face. When we feel that we should be encouraging him, he encourages us in the way he embraces life and makes the most of every day.

Here's hoping that the new treatment plan works well for him and you can get back to traveling soon. There are lots of trees out there waiting to be hugged! :c)

  8. I'm always interested in reading about what you two are doing... No matter what it is.... Since I'm stuck in dads driveway... I enjoyed reading about everybody and everything they are doing... always prayers for David and for you and Carrie..

  10. Do you really mean to put the pressure on us to talk about David's illness when we aren't yet ready to do it. We wanted this to be a travel blog not an illness blog. We hoped people would be more interested in our travels than in his illness. We sure are. But it seems that some people seldom comment unless we mention his illness. I'm very sorry about that, it's kind of depressing..

  11. Now that is definitely a "DAVID" breakfast!!!! I really do not believe for one minute that will be his last hurrah... there are just too many eateries which he needs to explore;o)) We think of you both so often and hope David's treatments eventually get his numbers to an acceptable level and you can get back out and explore the world. We will miss the travel blogs for awhile, but we will keep you in our thoughts daily. There is a huge group of bloggers/friends out here caring about you both:o))

  13. That farm picture was taken awhile ago...good picture :) That 'here we go again' breakfast looks scrumptious! Driving that far does not sound fun, but you made it! Life isn't always roses; we will hope, hope, hope you can get back out there soon!

  23. Awe, your deer :-) David's pre-breakfast face is hysterical - and of course the next one lights up the page! I've always thought that you're either blessed with the perfect-scrambled-eggs gene, or you aren't - there is definitely a special art to it. Maybe we'll make that our mission next year.......finding the perfect scrambled egg, taking pics of the chef who creates them, interviewing other eaters.......okay, sorry, maybe not :-) For now you have a big kitchen to make your own magic, lots of trees nearby for hugging, and a big field of grass to mow for......hmmmm, for somethin'!!

    1. Jodee, I am LOL at your comment. I did try to get the cook to come out so I could rave about her breakfast and get her picture but the waitress couldn't find her and then got too busy and forgot about it. Great minds think alike.

  24. That is one great breakfast ... at least it sounds wonderful, and I imagine it tasted wonderful considering all the raving you did ;-)) Nice of the locals to see you off on your trip to Virginia. Good luck with the new round of treatments.

  25. Wow, if we come to VA, would David try to make us a breakfast like that? I know he didn't fix the other, but it seems that he does whip up something great once in a while. Were you able to get a photo of the farmhouse during the high color of fall? Would love to see it.

There is not a day that passes that I don't think of you two....praying...'nuf said. Hugs....
