On to Glacier

Tuesday August 30, 2011
Glacier Campground Site F10
West Glacier, Montana

Monday was our last day at Jim & Mary’s in Missoula
so we did some cleaning and a few other little things

like back up the hard drive

Last Day at Jim & Marys

change Ruby’s air filter

Last Day at Jim & Marys (1)

and restring another living room shade

Last Day Jim & Mary 6

before heading off to Glacier National Park on Tuesday.

It was a hazy  Tuesday morning as we set out
on the lovely drive  up Route 93
beside Flathead Lake

To Glacier 011

and through the Flathead Indian Reservation
where all the signs were first in their language
and then in English.

On the way To Glacier-P&S 008

Along with a dual language sign,
this road had a “night” speed limit, the second
time in the past 5 months that we’ve seen that.

On the way To Glacier-P&S 004

To Glacier 012

And this sign posted multiple times.
I love it!!  What other highway department
would ask you to be polite??

Although it was a hazy day,
when the Rockies showed up
they were VERY impressive.

To Glacier 030

We stopped in Polson and were able to buy
gasoline at 17 cents under the price
we had seen everywhere else in Montana so far.
Never thought I’d hear myself say that $3.519
was a bargain!

We had made a reservation at Glacier Campground
in West Glacier, Montana for a site with
water and 30 amp electric
for $27.50 with Good Sam discount
in order to make sure we had a spot to go to
and to give us close access (1 mile to the Park entrance)
to check out Apgar Campground.

Glacier Campground is a nice park,
heavily wooded, with 175 sites which are not
too close to each other.  We are in F10
which is a lovely site.
Although we had a bit of trouble getting
level without taking both back tires off the ground.
But we managed and really like the site.

Foggy Day at Logan Pass 008

After set up, as usual, we took off for the
Visitors Center at Apgar Village just beyond the
West Entrance to the Park.

P1160113

It’s a very small visitor center but it still had the passport stamp.  “:-)

We picked up information on
the hiking trails, the
shuttle bus, the evening
programs and the stops along Going To The Sun Road.

We read this report from June 29 on an
“Aggressive Mountain Lion” in Upper McDonald Creek.
Let’s see, that was 2 months ago….whew!

P1160154

We walked around the village and to the shore
of Lake MacDonald.

To Glacier 043

The Apgar Village Lodge
is just like something you remember from the 50’s
with its red geraniums and darling little cabins.

P1160127A

To Glacier 052

Looks like a great place to stay if you
aren’t driving your home around with you.

P1160136

P1160137

We hiked along McDonald Creek
where we saw a nice beaver dam
but unfortunately no beavers.

To Glacier 056

To Glacier 058

On the way back to the car we
passed the Apgar School House
The sign over the door said - 1915 to 1958.
Of course it has been turned into a gift shop.

To Glacier 061

We took a swing by the Apgar campground
which will accommodate rigs up to 40’
but it has no hook ups.  We could see that it is totally
wooded so no trying out the solar panels here.
We’re planning to come back tomorrow
morning and run around it to check out the
sites more thoroughly.
We’ll keep you posted.

  1. Those "do not tailgate" signs are wonderful! I can think of many places that I'd like to see them posted.

Be careful of that mountain lion! Being the world's biggest chicken, that warning would be enough to make me tour Glacier NP via the Travel Channel.

  2. Those shade restrings are a pain! We have done four in five years so far.

Glacier Park is one we have missed, enjoy.

  3. Umm, I don't remember the 50's too well, I missed most of them...

Like that site you've got Wanda in, my kind of place.

Can't wait to see what you find on the Going to the Sun Highway, I want to go there, so I'll let you trail balze for me.

In PA., we remember seeing signs warning you to be aware of aggressive drivers;o((

  6. You guys have my admiration. I do not have the patience to restring those blinds. I just take them down go to lowes and buy new ones. We don't use the day/night thing anyway either up or down for us. We just replace them with the honeycomb ones.
Looks like you are in a great park. I think we might follow your route next summer.

  7. Gas is cheaper in Charlottesville - 3.459! But, it is not cheaper in Baltimore - 3.639. Boo... The cabins are cute - look like the ones at chautauqua :)
